SoundWaves Concert, Wednesday the 24th August, HMAS Cerberus.

A Review.
A Full house, a perfect venue and an anticipation from the audience of a good night to be had. As LT Matthew Klohs indicated when he took to the microphone to start the evening, their concert series has been a bit fragmented this year but it was good to be back performing to a responsive local audience.
The program featured ten pieces, some I recognised and others sounded interesting. Opening with a fanfare type composition by composer Rossano Galante, titled Resplendent Glory, LT Kloh's conducting exuberance came to the fore straight away and the band responded ( I can vouch for his veracity in his conducting, he held the baton for the Monash Concert Band when I was playing percussion and he was doing his conductors course). It really is amazing how acoustics play an important part when a band of only 28 strong (plus one or two that came in and out) can produce such a warm full sound that brings the pieces to life.

The programme was broken up with three Big band numbers and the band were very slick in moving into that combination as LT Klohs informed the audience of their up and coming program of events. The Big Band played two instrumentals, one featuring Able Seaman Stuart Malcolm on Flugelhorn and Able Seaman Stephanie Hutchinson joined the band on vocals in "I Just Found out about Love". Able Seaman Bruce McIntyre on Kit also had a little solo in one of the Big Band numbers when one of his legs gave way on his floor tom which then knocked the Crash Cymbal over, but to everybody's amazement it crashed in time of the big crescendo, so Bruce continued on in his flamboyant style.
The Highlight of the evening was the solo performance by Euphonium soloist Able Seaman Fletcher Mitchell performing "Harlequin" by Philip Sparke. Mathew mentioned that Fletcher had performed this as his test piece for his leading hand course and after the faultless performance Matthew made the point, that there would be at least 10,000 notes in that piece, I'm inclined to agree.

The band finished off the night with the majestic "Crown Imperial" which Len Nurse who was there on the night informed me he last played, when they were fare-welling the Seekers back in the seventies.
Another excellent performance by the Victorian Detachment. Their next concert is at the Willianstown Town Hall on the 5th of September.
Following is the complete programme.
