The Ceremonial Silver Drums
Thanks to Robin Himbury, the Silver Drums now have their pride of place in the history of the Royal Australian Navy Band. Through his book, "The Evolution of the Royal Australian Navy Band", the whole story is there for past and present members of the Band and public to read. This is his story.

The Library

The Library is a growing archive of photos, music and video presenting a history of the Royal Australian Navy Band up to today and into the future. The categories we have created should cover every aspect of the Bands achievements. It will provide a detailed insight into the life of the individual characters that made up the band and the events, ships and conflicts the band participated in over the last 98 years.

We suggest you keep revisting the categories as often as possible as inclusions will appear daily.

Enjoy the journey and help expand this library by submiting your photos and images for inclusion. Contact Errol at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. on how best to get your history to us.

PAST ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTERS

Its taken awhile but we have now found a satisfactory method of displaying our past newsletters to all our association members. This format is quick to view and does not rely on any other PDF programs to display.

We suggest you keep revisting this section as there are so many newsletters to load and it is going to take some months before it is completed.

MEMORABILIA

This section devotes itself to all those treasured pieces that were collected as we went about our duties. We kept them for prosperity, why, good question at the time, but now we can look back at them and reflect. If you have anything that reflects your time in the Band let us know.

FROM Gerry Foster
(Jan 2013)
HMAS PENGUIN EMBLEM
Sent through to Ralph Daines from Gerry Foster is this embroided emblem which has a bit of history. A small group of bandies from Penguin made a recording with Rolf Harris around 1969 and for payment were gifted a splendid jacket with the emblem. The jacket as Gerry say's, was top shelf quality from Evers' and Cohen Tailors and I still have it. The buttons on the jacket were unique as they were a gold plate with the Navy Crown in Sterling Silver. Gerry had a bit of design influence with the layout of the Lyre and the Ship (Penguin) in the enbroidery.

THEORY OF MUSIC

August 1970
Provided by: Errol Hatch (Oct 2012)
Its probably the only Diploma I ever got and I don't ever remember sitting for it. I do remember half a dozen of us doing lessons with Chris (Phooby) Marshall who was our theory teacher at the school, but I thought we spent most of the time listening to those bawdy recordings he was doing at the time. I think the practical side of being chucked in the deep end taught us more than a classroom.

Musician's In Conflict.

Since the birth of the Royal Australian Navy Band in 1913, Musicians have been involved in theatres of war either entertaining or serving in the ships company. From stretcher bearers to lookouts, flight Deck crew to galley staff, bands men and women have served with distinction. Some of the performances have been in the most unusual of places but their aim was to entertain and we achieved this without fanfare.

The following  images and stories are by the theatres and their years and will expand as we retrieve more archive material from member and ex members of the RAN band.
