This section devotes itself to all those treasured pieces that were collected as we went about our duties. We kept them for prosperity, why, good question at the time, but now we can look back at them and reflect. If you have anything that reflects your time in the Band let us know.

 SCHOOL OF MUSIC PROMOTION LEAFLET

Produced in 1969 and released in 1970 all the boys were from the school from what looks like the 1968 intake. Recognised faces are Louis Burdett, Pat Gallagher, John Lennon, Taffy Thatcher, Fred Blake (Cornet), The Hanratty Brothers, Red Hillier, Gary Sander, Jacko(F/Hn, Gtr), Michael Robinson, Shorty Butler and a couple of faces I can't pick, maybe you can.......

HMAS PENGUIN EMBLEM
Sent through to Ralph Daines from Gerry Foster is this embroided emblem which has a bit of history. A small group of bandies from Penguin made a recording with Rolf Harris around 1969 and for payment were gifted a splendid jacket with the emblem. The jacket as Gerry say's, was top shelf quality from Evers' and Cohen Tailors and I still have it. The buttons on the jacket were unique as they were a gold plate with the Navy Crown in Sterling Silver. Gerry had a bit of design influence with the layout of the Lyre and the Ship (Penguin) in the enbroidery.

Its probably the only Diploma I ever got and I don't ever remember sitting for it. I do remember half a dozen of us doing lessons with Chris (Phooby) Marshall who was our theory teacher at the school, but I thought we spent most of the time listening to those bawdy recordings he was doing at the time. I think the practical side of being chucked in the deep end taught us more than a classroom.

A very significant programme kept by Gordon Crompton for nearly 60 years, detailing the service held on the 23rd of April 1953 by the Coronation contingent. A definite piece of history.
The signature in pencil is that of the curator of the grounds at the time.

A detailed history of the RAN up to 1990. It covers all the wars the RAN participated in and is quite a good read.

1991 NAVY WEEK PERSONNEL LIST AND BAND CONFIGURATIONS.

The combined Bands from all Reserve Divisions and Perms from Naval Support, VNB and Fleet Band are on this List. A total of 160 plus players and support staff took part in the 80th Anniversary.

CORONATION CRUISE BY HMAS SYDNEY 1953

This little treasure was tucked away in Gordon's cabinet along with other important documents. It is a great read and supplements the Coronation cruise booklet written by Jim (Doc) Macleod, Compiled by Jim Hawkins.

Musician's In Conflict.

Since the birth of the Royal Australian Navy Band in 1913, Musicians have been involved in theatres of war either entertaining or serving in the ships company. From stretcher bearers to lookouts, flight Deck crew to galley staff, bands men and women have served with distinction. Some of the performances have been in the most unusual of places but their aim was to entertain and we achieved this without fanfare.

The following  images and stories are by the theatres and their years and will expand as we retrieve more archive material from member and ex members of the RAN band.

Associations Past Events

Since it's inception the association has held many official and not so official reunions and get togethers. From the memorable 2000 reunion in Sydney to the Perth Anzac Day in 2005, through to Ballina, Singapore and Echuca, all have had their special moments.
But one thing that comes out of all of these gatherings is the continued commeradery and respect shown to all when where together.

Major Events

The Royal Australian Navy Band can be associated with some of the most memorable major events undertaken in Australia and overseas on behalf of the Australian government and the Navy. The Coronation in 53 to the Melbourne Olympics, The Sydney Opera house opening to the parades of returned servicemen from conflicts, all have been substantial in there musical effect on the general public and their perception of the Royal Australian Navy Band.
There are so many of these events over the last 98 years this section will grow and grow as the site develops and contributions are sent in.

Reserve bands

Each state had one (up until recently) and they are an important part of  the RAN to provide the official and ceremonial requirements in their state were a permanent band could not be available. Not entirely made up of ex-perms but by musicians that enjoyed the ceremonial occasion's and the satisfaction that comes with playing with a professional band.

This section is a testament to the history of these bands and the continued importance for their existance. Primarily sorted by state then year this section will also include the all important ACT's with the perms at the specific depot's.

A brief history as to the formation of the Association from the pen of ex-secretary, Jim Hawkins.

Jim writes,
In May 1990 the Director of Music - Navy, LCDR Vic Knowles RAN invited Jim Hawkins to compile a column for the Navy produced and distributed newsletter, 'Royal Australian Navy Band News' which was distributed twice each year. This meant chasing up retired musicians and writing stories about their present whereabouts, occupations, interests etc. The column was published under the title 'EX-PRESS' for some time. (Some past newsletters will be featured in the "Past Newsletter section of the site)
Unfortunately, the RAN from then on went through a phase of cost-cutting with man-power and finances, to the point where new DOM-Navy, LCDR Ashley Greedy RAN found he had fewer people and less money to work with, so the band newsletter was one of the first items to suffer. Distribution became very haphazard to the point that in early 1993 it had been 18 months between newsletters.

Three former POMUSN's, Rob Bedwell, Ron Henry and Jim Hawkins discussed the situation, because Jim was receiving phone calls asking where the newsletter was, and obviously a civilian had no control over Navy produced magazines. The men decided to formed a steering committee, borrowed the Navy name & address list, and following some money being put into a kitty, mailed a very brief newsletter asking Ex's to join an association for the modest sum of $7 per year. This would allow 3 issues of a newsletter, and the organisation of 2 yearly National reunions. The response was excellent, with nearly 200 signing up, and a general meeting was called for the following year during a reunion to be held at the Surfers Paradise RSL Club on 9th July 1994.

The steering committee was returned for the next two years, with a meeting planned for Melbourne in 1996. In addition to Rob, Ron and Jim, Jim Stathis was elected Vice-President.
The Melbourne reunion also included a visit to CERBERUS where the long-awaited stained glass window was dedicated at St Marks Chapel, and another change in the committee took place. Ron MacKenzie was elected Vice-President. In 1998 saw Eastern Staters travel across the Nullabor to the Fremantle Navy Club, then to HMAS STIRLING, Rockingham for a Memorial Service to remember the Band from HMAS SYDNEY (2) who lost their lives when that ship was lost with all hands. Another committee change took place when Norm Gullick was elected President. During these reunions we were lucky to gain the services of the Queensland Naval Band (Surfers), RAN Band - Melbourne (Melbourne) and the WA Naval Band (Fremantle). As usual, a few of the 'old & bold' got out their trusty instruments on each occasion and had a 'blow'.

The year 2000 was to be something special. For 50 years, Bandies had spoken about meeting on the Man O' War steps, Sydney, at midnight on 31/12/99. As this was impossible because of the Sydney celebrations, and the expected crowds of more than 1.5 million people, so a reunion was organised for the Anzac Day long weekend. Following the Melbourne reunion in 1996, President Rob Bedwell had published a list of those who attended, and placed them in a parade band formation in the newsletter, with the caption..."Wouldn't this be a great sound".

Secretary Jim Hawkins took this idea a little further and asked members if they would be interested in forming a parade band to march in the Sydney Anzac Day parade. "Jim finishes with", The enthusiasm surprised everyone, and after much organising, a band of 75 members proudly marched within the Naval Association contingent, with our Patron LCDR George Hooker MBE, RAN (Rtd) out front. Two drummers, Rob Himbury and Ron Bergman dressed in the two uniforms we have worn (old and new rig) and marched on the flanks of the front rank.

This was the pivotal point in the Associations history to date. It produced an overwhelming response for the comradeship and respect given to the ex-band members and cemented the future of the Association. Today, we still have over 200 members of the association and reunions have taken place all over Australia and the band has ventured overseas since then. The Association will continue to grow with a vibrant executive led by Brian Ellis and Ralph Daines, ably supported By Vice-President, Don Buntine and Ron Henry.

We welcome all ex and serving members of the RAN, RANR and Volunteer Bands into the RAN Band Association.

Our ever expanding library is collecting hundreds of archive pictures that need these questions answered. This section will be devoted to displaying these images and relying on all our members to fill in the gaps.
